Description

Prerequisite: Acceptance into the current Practical Nursing program.
Designed to provide the student knowledge of the essential nutrients by definition, function, and food source; to relate how the body uses foods consumed for energy, growth, or maintenance; describe how health care providers can teach/assist clients to manipulate use of essential nutrients when pathology causes, or is caused by, nutritional impairment. Additional emphasis is placed on the need for health care providers to recognize changing nutritional needs of the various age-related populations throughout the lifespan and the need to educate clients about proper food preparation, storage, and safety. Cultural and religious diversity are included in terms of planning/providing meals/snacks that support physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs and patient/family education.
